I was watching The View today as I am prone to do when I am looking to gather fodder for my entertainment pieces. Well, todays debacle did not fail in its deliverance of a no holds barred, angered women speak on issues that the viewers tune in for.
Back in the days of 'The Viewmaster', Star Jones and Meredith Viera, the show was a sort of ho hum, but, enjoyable moment into the lives of many viewers who were perhaps looking to be entertained, enlightened and fed up at the same time with constant references to me, me, I, I , trivialities.
Now, with the ousting of Star Jones. The blatant abandonment of Meredith Viera and the shrinking face time of one of the co-producers of the show, Bill Getty, things have taken a turn for what I like to refer to as the smackdown in TV Talk.
Today, as usual in the first 10 minutes of the gabfest, things got off to a boring take on what each woman did on their day off, blah, blah, blah. Barbra Walters half hearted showed support for Oprah's Humanitarian Award by including the little known fact that Oprah once would mimic her in the early stages of her career by hand gestures and folding of legs, (sic)
Joy Behar's daughter is getting married, so she went to a family bridal shower, where the talk was food, keeping separate monies from your spouse and The Sopranos; The TV Show. Elizabeth Hassebeck brother graduated from Law School. They were text messaging at the ceremony which Barbra found slightly annoying.
Rosie O' Donnell had her "Mother-in-law" front row seat along with the husband, brothers, cousins, etc because Rosie was having a birthday party later for her "wife". Barbra Walters admittedly apologized to the mother in law for comments she'd made about the women being one of the nicest 'BIGOTS' Barbra had ever met and liked, to which Rosie had chastised Barbra for; stating to refer to the woman as a 'bigot' was a 'bit' much...
The show went "Jerry Springer" after commercial break and returned for more hot topics. Politics! Elizabeth Hassebeck implored Rosie O'Donnell to set the record straight about her reference to terrorists and America. Rosie accused young Republican Elizabeth of watching shows on FOX/CNN and basically becoming brainwashed. Elizabeth started to raise her voice to match that of Rosies' and Barbras', leading Joy Behar to seemingly warn the women that they were in front of cameras and on TV.
I came away after this insightful battle in the war of words between the women of The View, pondering what they will say, if they do win The daytime Emmy award for which the show is nominated. In the absence of Rosie O'Donnell, who stated today that she won't be available to go, I suppose the group will say something like, "If Rosie had not come along to p--s us off at every turn, the three of us would not be standing before you today, holding something we have lusted after for the longest time !"
